Fitchburg residents can apply for or renew their dog’s license online or download the paper application and renew via mail or in person, following instructions on the respective form. State law requires that all dogs over 6 months have a current dog license. All dogs must be licensed every year. Dog licenses issued for any given year expire on March 31 of the following year. There is a grace period until May 1.
Owners of dogs not re-licensed by May 1 will be fined $15 plus the cost of the annual license fee(s) not paid. Proof of current rabies vaccination is required in order to license your dog. A reminder and option to license by mail is sent with the annual city census form.

Spayed female or neutered male dogs $9
In order to obtain a license, you will need:
- A rabies vaccination certificate with an expiration date OR copy of medical records with rabies expiration date;
- Proof of spay or neuter (if not shown before), actual surgery certificate OR if noted on Rabies/Medical History; FEES: Spayed Female/Neutered Male ($9) ;Un-Spayed Female/Un-Neutered Male ($15)
- If licensing by mail, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope;
- Make check or money order payable to: City of Fitchburg.
All dogs must be licensed and should wear the tag. Current rabies certificate is required for licensing. A late fine of $15 will be applied for dogs not re-licensed by May 1st in addition to the prior annual licensing fees not paid.
