WHAT IS "INFILTRATION" AND "INFLOW"? AND, WHY IS THE CITY DOING "SMOKE TESTING", "DYED WATER TESTING", AND "BUILDING INSPECTIONS"?
These questions and subjects are driven by the City's Consent Decree with EPA and the MassDEP, but are also in line with good, appropriate and responsible management and maintenance of our City's sewer system infrastructure, and our publicly owned treatment works.
Identifying and removing sources of this water from the sanitary sewers will help prevent sewer overflows, sewer service basement backups, releases of untreated sewage to the environment, and the overwhelming of our treatment plant's capacity during wet weather events.
The below short YouTube video helps to illustrate what "Infiltration" and "Inflow" is for private properties.
